Unschooing friendly articles!

Ah, how our days have been unusually full since we returned home! Typically a twofer is our out and about quota each week. No more, the little man appears on a mission. And mama is in heaven :) Gone are the days of playing cars on the floor for 10 hours straight. We're out and about in the city I adore and I am happily exhausted. Oh, so is the little man ;)

Alas, my no-time-has-elapsed photos are missing... These adventures haven't been photo friendly. We've been hitting the beach regularly to escape the heat without any A/C (could I mention that more often? I'm so pleased with us for doing our part that I seem stuck on tooting that horn...) And since its just P and I surfing the waves, I can't cart the camera with and then leave it to flounder on the packed parts of Coney Island by its lonesome, just looking to get pocketed. But its uber-fun flouncing about the waves with P monkey wrapped to my waist. He's brave enough this summer to wade out past the wave break and undulate with the tide. A quick preference has emerged for less windy days tho - we just about got swallowed up last time! The scene is constantly surprising to this midwesterner too. There are hundreds of people standing in the water with us, bobbing about. So, it goes without saying that P's crowd issues are coming along nicely....

We've been to the Mulberry Street library every few days too. Sometimes for homeschool meet-ups (we did a faaabulous project that I'll post about later), sometimes just to read in the nice A/C (toot-toot!) I need to start keeping a list of P's fave reads. Lately its been "My father's dragon."

There's also been coop runs, art outings, marionette shows and park time, but every day has seen us on the subway to somewhere. Most surprisingly, at the little man's bidding. I know he waxes and wanes in his get up and go-ness, but we're going and loving it right now!

So, since there's little blather to wade through here this week, I'll post two links to two articles. The first, about an unschooling family in NYC featured in the New Yorker. The journalist contacted us about an interview at one point, but I tend to babble and didn't think it a wise move :) The second, is a link from a dear friend about the pitfalls of teaching math to the young. Something also echoed in much of Japan's current curriculum. Ok, they both sound dry here, but they are good reads, really!
