Bye-Bye Brooklyn

P alternated between "let's go, NOW" and "I don't want to leave Brooklyn" the week before our trip. Lifetime light packer that he is (ha-ha), we could have filled an airplane with everything he requested come to Kansas.

But the day before we left he found his most wanted traveling companion: Opi. We have snail searched for over a month now, to no avail, only to finally find one the day before our departure. We stopped by Yoav's house (they just moved to the neighborhood!!! Only 5 blocks away from fellow unschoolers we adore - how dreamy is that?) for a quick visit and found a beautiful swirled snail in Yoav's backyard.

Once home he slimed his way across our table while we made a little snail abode. P then dubbed him Opi, a fabulous name for our little hermaphrodite to be sure :) For the remainder of the day P was alternately possessed with sweet protectiveness and curious aggression towards his new charge. He'd worry about the cat grabbing Opi or Opi getting lost and then suddenly growl loudly at Opi's head ("It was my ankylosourus mama.) When we'd googled snails he learned that they are deaf, so this became the preferred experiment (versus closely careening car tires...)

Thinking one cat and one three year old was more than enough to fly with, we set Opi free in the park with plans to find another (unfortunate) shelled friend in Kansas...
